Optical lattice based quantum simulators for topological matter

Ultracold dilute gases in optical lattices are regarded among the ideal platforms for quantum engineering and quantum simulation of interesting models, including relativistic lattice fermions and a majority of phases in the periodic table of topological insulators. To illustrate it, a proposal of ours will be illustrated, namely a versatile toolbox based on a spin-independent bi-chromatic optical lattice combined with Raman-assisted transitions to engineer a spin-dependent tunneling of the atoms (in arbitrary dimensions). A brief outlook in the direction of chiral superconductors and of flat-bands creation will be also provided.
